A thorough examination and diagnosis will be done by our dentist to determine if a crown is needed. The dentist first examines the location, size of the defect, the way you bite and vitality of the affected tooth. If crowning is required, treatment consist of shade selection followed by careful removal of decayed and weakened areas of the tooth.
Our dentist will then administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. The tooth will be filed down and an impression will be taken so that a new crown can be fabricated to the exact specifications. A temporary crown is made and fitted over the prepared tooth in between visits.
On the fitting appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented. Our dentist will check to ensure the crown can sit well, have good margins and is in contact with adjacent and opposing teeth.
The procedure can be completed within 2 visits; the first for tooth preparation (about 1 hour) and the second for crown fitting (about 15-20 minutes)
Tooth preparation is usually done under local anaesthetic hence the procedure is painless. However, the treatment can be a little tiring for the patient, due to prolonged mouth opening especially for the back teth.
