Why Root Canal Treatment?

Virtually Pain-Free Procedure

Root canal treatment is virtually painless and often leaves you with less discomfort during recovery than if you have your natural tooth extracted. Thanks to modern techniques and effective anesthesia, patients who experience root canals are six times more likely to describe it as painless than patients who have a tooth extracted.

Efficient & Cost-Effective

Tooth extraction can take longer than root canal treatment due to follow-up appointments required for a denture, bridge or implant; plus the cost may be higher.

Visually Appealing Result

Crowns not only function like natural teeth; they look great, too. Improve your smile and laugh out loud again with root canal treatment.

Stop Dental Infection

Although infection may be in your tooth now, that doesn’t mean it will stay there. The interior of your tooth can be a sheltered place where bacteria can thrive. This makes it easy for infections to spread from your tooth into other areas. The infection can spread into your bone, and then into other teeth, causing pain there, too. It can also spread into your sinuses and then to the brain. Or it can spread to your heart or lungs, with serious, even deadly consequences.

But root canal therapy can eliminate the infection to protect your health and even your life from bacteria.

Preserve Your Tooth

When your tooth is infected, there are essentially two options to stop the infection: root canal therapy and extraction. Obviously, extraction leaves you with a gap in your smile that will need to be addressed somehow, such as with a dental implant or a partial denture.

But root canal therapy allows you to preserve the structure of your natural tooth. With just a filling or a dental crown, your tooth is restored to full function again.

Restore Your Smile

One of the visible effects of an infected tooth is often that it becomes badly discolored. This discoloration comes from the bacteria growing inside the tooth and its impact on the tooth’s healthy pulp. This discoloration is highly visible, as it often turns very dark, a deep brown or black. This discoloration won’t respond to teeth whitening.

But with root canal therapy, we’ll ensure that your smile looks as beautiful as ever. If your infected tooth has become discolored, we’ll cover it with a dental crown that provides your tooth with a new, beautiful exterior.

the solution to saving your natural tooth

What Is A Root Canal?

Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth during its development. A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.

The treatment is very similar to a routine filling and can usually be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. Getting a root canal is relatively painless and extremely effective. You’ll be back to smiling, biting and chewing with ease in no time.

How do I start treatment?

Root Canal Treatment Process

  1. Before starting the root canal treatment, a local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth and the area surrounding it. Then, the dentist will use a rubber dam to keep the tooth clean and free from saliva.
  2. Once the tooth is numb enough, an opening will be made at the top part of the tooth. With the use of root canal files, the inside of the canals are cleaned and shaped. During this process, a cleaning solution will be used to thoroughly clean all the bacteria in the area.
  3. During the process, several x-rays will be done for your dentist to identify what is going on inside the tooth.
  4. Finally, root canal filling is done by placing a material, often rubber-like, that fills the entire root canal. A temporary filling will then be placed on the treated tooth.
  5. The root canal treatment finally finishes when a crown is placed to make the tooth functional again.

Frequently Asked Questions

t

Why do I need root canal treatment?

If tooth pulp becomes acutely inflamed or infected — because of decay or injury for example — the tissue will need to be removed in order to save the tooth and stop the infection from spreading. An adult don’t actually need the pulp — its primary use is to aid in tooth development during childhood.

t

Is there an alternative?

You can have the whole tooth extracted, but the very best option would be to save your natural tooth if possible — especially since root canal treatment is routine and has a very high success rate. Saving your natural tooth can prevent other troubles from occurring later on; these could include bite problems from teeth shifting position, difficulty eating, and loss of jawbone volume and density.

t

What are the benefits?

  • Preserve your natural tooth
  • Stop dental infection
  • Virtually pain-free procedure
  • Efficient & cost-effective
  • Visually appealing result
  • Restore your smile
t

What is the success rate?

Root canal treatment is highly successful; the procedure has more than a 95% success rate. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime. Having said that, success rates depend on many factors, for example, the patient’s oral care and hygiene to prevent bacteria reinfection. Hence, regular checkups and diligently maintaining one’s oral hygiene is of utmost importance in preventing failure.

t

What precautions should be taken after the treatment?

Some tenderness or sensitivity may be present for a few days during the healing after a root canal filling. Chewing on the root canal treated tooth should be avoided until the tenderness subsides. This may take three to seven days. Chewing should begin on the root canal treated tooth only after it has been strengthened and restored by a crown.

t

How much do the treatment cost?

Every patient’s need is unique. Your treatment cost depends on your particular needs. After a complete examination and consultation, your dental needs will be more specifically determined and the most viable treatment option proposed to you.

t

Does it hurt?

For some, root canal treatment is associated with excruciating pain and anxiety. However, the pain you feel is usually caused by an infection or injury in the tooth, not the root canal treatment itself. On the contrary, root canal treatment is performed to eliminate pain.

A root canal procedure is painless during the procedure due to modern medicine. The procedure is performed when the nerve or blood supply of the tooth is infected.

t

How long does a root canal treatment take?

The amount of time a procedure takes depends on the complexity of the issue you’re having and the type of tooth involved. We estimate the treatment time to be approximately 1-2 hours. The treatment itself can often be completed in one visit. At times, a second appointment may be needed.

t

How to prevent the need for a root canal treatment in future?

Keep your teeth decay-free by brushing and flossing every day. Eat a healthy diet low in sugar and avoid acidic drinks. Have regular professional cleanings and examinations. And if you’re active in sports, consider ordering a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth from injury.
